For those who don’t know, a “filk” song is a science fiction/fantasy folk genre, generally adding new lyrics to an existing tune. Though many filk writers also write original tunes, as I pay tribute to in this post.
The rest of this post is written by my husband, Rick Moen.
People who’ve been on SMOFS for a while might remember http://filkerdave.livejournal.com/541186.html. Well, I’ve gone and done the dirty deed a second time.
Sad Puppies Aren’t Much Fun
(With apologies to Ogdel Edsl and fond memories of Dr. Demento.)
Sad puppies
Sad puppies
Sad puppies aren’t much fun.
They all fight for silenced voices,
By crowding out all other choices.
Sad puppies aren’t much fun.
Inclusiveness means broader picks,
Yet Three Body Problem gets a ‘nix’.
Sad puppies aren’t much fun.
Wright’s novellas mustn’t be ignored,
But his rocket points straight at Noah Ward.
Sad puppies aren’t much fun.
Sad puppies
Sad puppies
Sad puppies aren’t much fun.
Sad puppies
Sad puppies
Sad puppies aren’t much fun.
Sad puppies
Sad puppies.
FWIW, I just noticed this similar filk by Robert Whitaker Sirignano,
posted Feb. 11th to Mike Glyer’s File770 site:

(I knew it was a pretty obvious trope when I went for it.)
And finally, master filker Tom Smith hits it out of the park!

I was even earlier, back on January 11 when Brad Torgersen first announced Sad Puppies 3. Though right now I’m of very mixed feelings towards it (though I’m quite satisfied with the craft in it).

Thank you for the fact check! And the song.
I have an old TWoP tee with a turnip that says, “I’ve got a cunning plan.” Now I’m going to have to dig it out for Worldcon.
Thanks! But I need to record the song sometime (I’ll probably perform it at Archipelacon[1]).
Say hi to Rick from me!

I know we want to go to Archipelacon, but I can’t remember if that’s a weekend we’re committed to something else. Or not. I know that in the weeks leading up to it, we’ll be in Rome and Venice, then back to the US for a wedding, then the con’s the following weekend, and Westercon’s in San Diego the weekend after that.
I’ve been wanting to visit Åland.
If you don’t have memberships now (and I doubt you have – you’re not listed on the page and there is only one anonymous US member) then you’ll have to get second-hand memberships – the con hit its membership of 800 ceiling a month or so back. But I look forward to it, they have a very strong committee for this type of con.
Åland is wonderful, but you’ll need to spend at least some days getting out on the countryside, especially if you get there from outside of Sweden or Finland. But Swedish and Finnish fandom hold regular cons there now, the Åcon, usually in late April or early May.
Cheerful greetings and well met, Mr. svenskt mushroom. Yes, we do have hopes of being in Åland for Archipelacon, so perhaps we can finally meet there. Or, if Helsinki wins the Worldcon for 2017, perhaps you can sneak over the border.

Oh, we Swedes don’t sneak over the border into Finland. Though they might look a bit askance at me if I were to sing March of the Dendarii Cavalry in the First Cetagendan War[1] while entering.

Your slant on it is a bit more polished than mine. And more accurate, as well.
Robert! Thanks for the comment. You did a perfectly fine job too, and I got a good laugh out of it. So, thank you for the filk.

Maybe combine the two?
Robert, it took me six years to notice your most recent comment, for which my profound apologies. You have my total approval to combine my modest effort with one of yours if you wish.
I had the pleasure of hearing Tom Smith’s performance of his version at Sasqan, and IMO it’s definitive — but there is plenty of room for your and my efforts, too. Please proceed with my complete blessing.
